While all roads might lead to Rome
the challenge of exiting the city was like driving through Alice in wonderland’s fantasy world where
everything is a mirror image of normality. They drive on the right side of the
road instead of the left, the steering wheel is on the left side instead of the
right but the gear lever is in the right hand rather than the left. The Sun is
towards the South instead of the North, fast is good and slow is bad ………and my co pilot is holding the map upside
down and hasn’t even worked out her right from left.
Driving in Rome is just a
high stakes version of Nairobi .
The rules are similar but the cars are worth a lot more money and the speeds
are a lot faster.
So after listening to the COUNCIL of French Shirley, Kiwi Bronni and Italiano
signs I realize something was wrong with this approach when we pass through the
same roundabout the third time at 120 km/hr……
and there is another late model 500 SL Merc right up my exhaust pipe with
faulty flashing headlights and horn.
When one says left, the other right and the driver doesn’t
listen; we have a problem.
Actually the thing the catches me out the most is the stupid
windscreen wiper control.
We had a pleasant drive north to Cinque Terre to catch up
with Whanau The roads are good, tunnels
are long but the tolls are not cheap. Fortunately the Peugeot is economical
(5litre/100km) but at 1.7e/litre it needs to be. If your traveling long
distances a camper van is not the best option unless you do what the boys did
and stack 5-7 people in the van and run it off body odor; but that’s another
story.
