The Ultimate overland vehicle herein thereafter referred to
as UOV.
From day one you begin to plan the “UOV”. In each aspect of
your journey you see the strength and weakness of yours and other “OV” and you
begin to modify what you have got and dream about what you really would like.
Faffer Neil is the specialist. He makes clips to hold the
fridge lid up; he creates compartments in the fridge so that the meat freezes
and his beer doesn’t, he scrounges boxes for water containers, bits of tin for
gas shrouds and wire just in case.
And then there’s the dream process.
We remember the new Landover with less than 10,000km with a
blown engine in the central Kalahari. Cross Landover off.
Secondary fuel tanks that give a range of 1500 kms. Yes
please
Ordinary suspension & tyres. No thanks. Must be raise,
strengthened with high floation.
We debate the offset between comfort, cost and weight.
Internal access from the cab to the drivers seat. Living in the wet, handling
in the sand, availability of parts, reliability, security and setup time.
Is a trailer the answer?
The South Africans have perfected
the overland trailer which makes it easier for game viewing as you don’t pack
up everyday……. but the length, the drag.
Perhaps the lift off Camper over a flat tray. But then the
centre of gravity can be a problem.
The Swiss have a stretch Toyota conversion which looks promising…..but
are heavy. Wow think what happens if they get stuck.
Like the “shinny prop debates” at Hot Water Beach the answer is not definitive and everything
is a compromise.
But the debate & dreams remain..... and wouldn’t life be a
bore without our dreams.

Footnote from the other half.
……and as Bronni sees the shiny prop debate as a mindless
waste of time her comments on this blog
is not dissimilar.
